Approximately 11 400 golf carts are currently registered in Peachtree City, and though these environmentally friendly carts have many benefits, they do not come without hazards. In the three years 2011, 2012, 2013,   a total of 200 accidents were reported, of which 40 incurred injuries, and 98 involved drivers aged 16 years and under. I could find no recent statistics. The City of Peachtree City has compiled a comprehensive brochure entitled “Do YOU know the RULES?” and it provides all the information an owner or a driver of such a vehicle needs to know about traveling safely on the paths. There are more than 10,000 registered gas- and electric-powered carts in the city, cruising through more than 100 miles of paths. In January, the Peachtree City Police Department reported a 33 percent increase in cart-related accidents in 2016, mostly involving teenagers. Social media posts in Peachtree City often cite incidents in which (mostly young) golf cart drivers blow past pedestrians without slowing down. Peachtree City is always buzzing with golf carts, but complaints continue to arise about drivers who drive too fast or pass without warning, endangering pedestrians, pets and other users of the city’s 100 miles of multi-use paths. Although the city’s safety rules stipulate that golf cart drivers must give audible warnings when approaching pedestrians, the City Council was recently approached about mandating horns on carts. The city says its existing regulations are sufficient, but we asked Peachtree City readers what improvements might be made. ANNEXURE 9 Sec. 78-96. - Hazardous activities and special rules. (a)     Paths are for transportation and public recreation by the various groups of permitted users. No individual or group shall engage in hazardous activities on the paths and streets and those areas accessible by the public. Such hazardous activities, and the special rules pertaining to them, include but are not limited to the following: (1)     Racing of any form, except for special events approved by the city; and (2)     Blocking of public access, except for special events approved by the city.
